THE OPPORTUNITY
“Truly green electronics feature materials and use manufacturing processes that are less energy-intensive than traditional methods and use renewable and natural materials when possible.”

Greenpeace published a Guide to Greener Electronics 2017, which measures 3 factors:

1. Reduction of greenhouse gases through efficiency and renewable energy
2. Elimination of hazardous chemicals from both the product itself and manufacturing
3. Sustainable design and use of recycled and recyclable materials.

The current linear production model requires massive amounts of virgin inputs…brands can reduce the need for virgin materials by incorporating more recycled/secondary inputs such as plastic and metals and striving to use as many closed-loop inputs in their products.
THE CHALLENGE
Experts have cited a variety of reasons why recycling rates remain low, including the lack of tech-waste recycling facilities and drop off points.

Physical barriers: including limited access to recycling bin containers, unreliable collection service or living in places far from recycling sites.
Behavioral issues: like people assuming they’re too busy to recycle or simply forget about it.
Lack of knowledge or understanding: about what can get recycled;
Attitudes or perceptions: such as thinking recycling is a waste of time.
5. Electronics and E-Waste Products Are Quickly Obsolete and Discarded:
in the US, we scrap about 400 million units per year of consumer electronics, according to recycling industry experts
6. Electronics are Difficult To Recycle:
Materials used and physical designs make recycling challenging. While companies claim to offer “green electronics,” we are a far way from truly green products.
7. Discarded Electronics Are Managed Badly- Most e-waste still goes in the landfill:
The EPA estimates that in 2019, the US generated nearly 6.9 million TONS of e-waste. But only about 25% of that was collected for recycling. The other 75% went to landfills and incinerators,
THE
SOLUTION
1. Design for the Planet – Extension of life comes before recycling.
By extending the useful life of an electronic device, the negative environmental impacts created in the manufacture and disposal of that device are spread out over time, helping to reduce the sector’s overall impact.

2. Use Recycled and Recyclable Materials & Design products that are Land-fill and Planet Friendly.
